Introduction
INITIATIVE TWO : A SUBHASHITA A DAY (FROM THE SACRED SOUNDS OF SANSKRIT)
On behalf of the LANKA KRISHNAMURTI FOUNDATION we wish to place on record our appreciation of the encouragement we got for the just concluded programme
A SLOKA A DAY.
We would like to explore another aspect of the initiative for promoting Sanskrit studies. There is a kind of poetic composition in Sanskrit known as Subhashita. It is usually a four-line of two-line stanza. It is used to convey a message or give advice in language that is precise, sharp and direct. Su- means ‘well’ and –bhashita means ‘spoken’. It is an expression that is elegantly styled and easy to memorize.
What is ‘well spoken of’ or the content of the Shubhashita is very important. It reflects, in general, the ethos of our culture which has its own characteristic values. Of them, the ethical values are the essential ones and form an integral part of our culture. The Subhashitas are known for their moral advice, instructions in worldly wisdom and guidance in doing righteous deeds. The Subhashitas deal with various subjects including topics of day to day experiences that everyone can easily relate to. There are thousands of Subhashitas in Sanskrit literature.
Though the authors of most of them are unknown, some of them have been contributed by highly reputed authors like Bhartrhari, Chanakya, Kalidasa and Bhavabhuti. In addition, there are several collections of Subhashitas containing the wise sayings of the famous writers. From such rich fund of Subhashitas, we have selected some valuable ones and will introduce each of them, under the caption A SUBHASHITA A DAY.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ ಅಂದರೆಒಳ್ಳೆಯಮಾತು. ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳನ್ನುಓದುವುದರಿಂದನಮಗೆಜ್ಞಾನವುಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳುನಮಗೆನೀತಿಯನ್ನುಬೋಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆಹಾಗೂತತ್ವವನ್ನುಉಪದೇಶಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳುಮಾರ್ಗದದೀಪಗಳಂತೆನಮಗೆಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನವನ್ನುಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ.ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳನ್ನುಓದುವುದರಿಂದನಮ್ಮಜ್ಞಾನವುಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ.
