Bhakti  is foremost among the four approaches in the Saadhana Maarga, the other three being  Adhyayana,  Swadharma Anushthana  and Dhyaana.                                          <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bhakti is a bhaava or a state of mind in which t devotee feels intense urge, great impulsion, to seek and find union with the object of devotion. The Bhakta reaches out with intensity of emotion .<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one of the shlokas in his Shivaanandalahari<\/em>, Sri Sankara defines bhakti thus:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the seeds of Ankola tree, which lie scattered on the ground, find their way back to the mother tree;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the iron needle is irresistibly drawn by the lodestone placed nearby,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the faithful wife looks solely to her beloved husband for comfort and pleasure;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the growing creeper seeks the support of the nearby tree to rest upon it;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the flowing river rushes to the ocean to merge in it;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So does my mind seek out ardently the two lotus-feet of Shiva, find them and remain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

fixed to them \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

that indeed is called Bhakti. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The urge, the drive, to attain the union with the Divine requires to be put into practice constantly and consistently. With total involvement, the urge should get intensified by enhancing the potential in all the three dimensions of one\u2019s personality:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1,  at the body level, by stepping up the energies;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  at the speech level, by toning up the purity of articulation, Vaakshuddhi<\/em>; and <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.  at the level of the mind, by gearing up the functions of Manas and Buddhi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the nine ways of Bhakti, Navavidha Bhakti, Smaranam<\/em> seems to serve our purpose best. It is a practice more inclusive than Shravanam<\/em> and Keertanam<\/em>. Smaranam<\/em> means remembering or recollecting what we have experienced by way of Shravanam <\/em>and Keertanam. It should also include Mananam<\/em> and Dhyanam, Reflection and Meditation. That is, the experience gets consolidated when we understand the meaning and meditate on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our devotional practices, our attention, most of the time, is outwardly<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We visualize images, places, and events away from us objectively.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us see how it works when we internalize the practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us shift the field of practice to the space in our Hrudaya<\/em>, at the central region in the chest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a sacred space preferred by the Yogis for contemplation and meditation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        <\/strong>\u092f\u094b\u0917\u093f\u0939\u0943\u0926\u094d\u0927\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928\u0917\u092e\u094d\u092f\u0902<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

         \u201cyogi hruddhyaana gamyam<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \u2018By meditating on Him, the Yogis aim at realizing Him in their hearts.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It is also known as Hrudaya Aakasa<\/em>. There is a reference to it in the Taittariya Upanishad:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

       \u201cIn the space that there is in the heart, is this Purusha who is realizable through knowledge, and who is immortal and effulgent.\u201d  (Part I Chapter 6)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So HRUDAYA is a sacred space and Paramatma resides there together with Prana and Jivatma.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We often hear the expression \u201cHrudaya Kamala\u201d, the Lotus of the Heart<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us fix our attention on this Lotus, using the technique of Visualization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us choose the space in the Hrudaya Kamala for practicing  Bhakti.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Let us make a small beginning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With closed eyes focus your attention<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

on the middle of your chest.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visualize the vast space within.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the Hrudayakaasha.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(With closed eyes)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visualize a JYOTHI         <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with full brilliance,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Light of Lights,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And pray:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
