DASASLOKI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 by  Sri  Shankaracharya<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

       Shankara, we are told, spontaneously composed a set of ten shlokas,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

which has come to be known as Dasasloki, and he recited it before<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Govindapaada who had asked the question \u201cWho are You?\u201d when approached by Shanakara for discipleship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

       Govindapaada must have been very much impressed by the young sishya\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

command on Advaita Vedanta and his creative ability found in the structure and organization of the poem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dasasloki shares some common features with Sri Dakshinamurthy Stotram.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.    Both have ten stanzas each.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.    The first nine stanzas in each have a refrain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

       It is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cTasmai Sri Gurumurtaye nama idam Sri Dakshinamurthaye\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     in  Sri Dakshinamurthy Stotram and<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201ctadekovasishthah Shivah kevaloham<\/em>\u201d  in Dasasloki.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.    Both the poems expound Advaita Siddhaanta along with Saadhana krama  and   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Advaita anubhava.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is sarvaatmatva bhaava<\/em>, ONENESS of EVERYTHING, in Sri Dakshinamurthy Stotram  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

in Dasasloki,  it is the Realisation of the Mahavaakyas like<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                          Tat Tvam Asi and Aham Brahmasmi.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming to Dasasloki, the first nine slokas have a common structure:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each sloka has four lines:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two lines negate the layer of non-Self;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third line gives the reason for negation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth line is an Assertion of the Self:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201ctadekovasishthah Shivah kevaloham\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, I am the ONE, which remains;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am that only One;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am Shiva, the Consciousness,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pure and Auspicious<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last stanza indicates the Advaita Anubhuti or Non-dual Self-Realization, which is very difficult to give expression to. It is beyond the power of mind and speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We remember the line in the Pratahsmarana Stotram:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  \u201cPraatarbhajaami manasa vachasaamagamyam.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I wake up I sing in praise of That<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

which is not reached with the help of<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

mind and speech\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder when asked by his disciples, as he was leaving his mortal coil, which of his works would serve to remember him by, Shankara is believed to have named Dasasloki.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madhusuudana Saraswati was a profound scholar who was well-versed in Advaita Vedanta. He belonged to the 16th century. He was a great admirer of Shankara, particularly of his poem Dasasloki.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSiddhantabindu\u201d  <\/em>is the name of his detailed commentary on Dasasloki.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us find out his admiration for Shankara and for Dasasloki in his own words:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c The revered Acharya Bhagavan Sri Sankara, being desirous of lifting all living beings (out of this transmigratory existence) either immediately or mediately, composed the ‘Dasasloki’ for the purpose of expounding briefly the means of discriminating the not-self from the self which is eternal (nitya), free from the stain of ignorance (shuddha), self-luminous (buddha) and free from the bondage of agency, etc., (mukta).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNote: Liberation will result immediately from hearing the Dasasloki for those who have attained complete purity of mind and thereby become most competent spiritual aspirants (Uttama-adhikaari).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For others, hearing should be followed by reflection and meditation.\u201d \u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 1.    I am not the Earth, nor the Water,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

of all the Elements and senses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I negate them<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

because they are all<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 2.     I am rid of all notions of caste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and caste divisions;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

so also I am rid of all rules and duties<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

applicable to various stages of life;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not need the Yogic practices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

like dhaarana and dhyaana.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are notions of \u201cI\u201d and \u201cmine\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

which are caused by adhyaasa \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the false identification with<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the body-mind complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I am free from all<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

false notions attached to the non-Self.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I am the ONE, which remains;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.    It is said that in Deep Sleep state<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

there is no mother, no father,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

nor are there any gods and worlds,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

nor even the Vedas and the sacrifices\/<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and so are the holy places.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is not completely shoonya or void<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

since I persist through the Deep Sleep state.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.      I deny the views expressed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

by the followers of Sankhya,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saiva, Pancharatra, Jaina, Meemamsa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and other faiths.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their views on the Self are unsound.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It is through direct realization of the Self<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

by means of the Mahavakyas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

that the Self is experienced to  be absolutely Pure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 So, I am the ONE, which remains;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

neither is it in the middle nor across.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is neither in the East<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

nor in the west.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is All-Pervading like Space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is Total and Indivisible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.    Brahman looks neither white nor black;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

neither red nor yellow;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

neither small nor big;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

neither short nor long.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has no particular Form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

because of its Radiance and Effulgence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
